Few ships on this board were built for the kind of service this one saw. The U.S.S. *Nahant* was a turret monitor, a low-freeboard design that carried its heavy guns in a rotating armored turret, and it was launched during the Civil War. By the late 1890s, when this portrait was likely made, monitors like her were largely obsolete, yet they remained in service for harbor defense. The record does not name the sailor, but the photograph shows a chief petty officer, a senior enlisted rank that kept the crew running day to day. The glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format work documented American places and people in the decades around 1900.
