Two prospective commanders stand together on the deck of the submarine U.S.S. Lafayette, one designated for the blue crew and the other for the gold crew. The pairing reflects the Polaris program's practice of splitting each boat's personnel into two crews that alternated long patrols, so one crew could be at sea while the other was ashore. Lafayette was a fleet ballistic missile submarine built at the General Dynamics Electric Boat yard in Groton, Connecticut, which made this 1962 photograph. It captures the command assignments being settled before the boat entered service.
