This photograph shows the crew of the battleship U.S.S. New Mexico posed across the deck and on the ship's large guns, with sailors arranged in tiers so that nearly everyone is visible. The print was made around 1920 by C.E. Waterman, a photographer in Long Beach, California, whose studio was close to the Pacific Fleet's home port at San Pedro. The New Mexico, commissioned in 1918, spent much of the early 1920s with the Pacific Fleet, and group portraits like this one were common ways for a ship's company to mark its service. The copyright deposit notation in the record shows the image was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.
