Older crew members of the U.S.S. Enterprise stand together on deck in a scene titled "spinning a yard," a task that meant swinging one of the long spars that carried a ship's square sails. The record dates the picture to about 1898, but that date and the ship's identification come from an old caption card and have not been verified. The photograph is from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American places and everyday work to tourists and collectors around the turn of the century. Worth noticing are the weathered faces, the rigging overhead, and the sense of a navy still relying on sail-era skills during a period of rapid change.
