Unlike the steel battleships this board is built around, the U.S.S. Enterprise was a transitional vessel from the 1870s, a warship that carried both sails and steam engines. Its photograph dates from the years between 1890 and 1901, when the Navy was rapidly replacing such ships with modern armored fleets. The print was issued by the Detroit Photographic Company, a firm known for commercial views of American places and ships that were sold to a broad public. Looking closely, you can see how the tall masts and rigging sit alongside the funnel and hull of a steam-powered ship.
