Few images capture a battleship as tightly fitted into a lock as this one, with the *Arizona*'s gray hull rising almost to the chamber walls. The ship was a Pennsylvania-class battleship commissioned in 1916, and the Panama Canal's lock system, which lifted and lowered vessels in stages between the oceans, was the engineering feat that let the U.S. Navy move its fleets between the Atlantic and Pacific. Photographer C.F. Rottmann's copyright notation suggests the picture was sold as a commercial view of the canal, which was a popular subject in the 1920s. The image is a useful record of how closely a dreadnought had to be guided through the narrow chambers.
