The photograph shows the battleship USS Ohio steaming through the Panama Canal at the Cucaracha Slide, a stretch of the Culebra Cut where unstable hillsides repeatedly slid into the channel during construction. The cut was the canal's most difficult excavation, and the slides there kept engineers busy long after the waterway opened to traffic in 1914. Passing a dreadnought-era warship through such a narrow, shifting passage was a demonstration of the canal's usefulness to the U.S. Navy, which needed to move ships between the Atlantic and Pacific without sailing around South America.
