Men at work with rock drills form the subject of this 1915-16 view of the U.S. Naval prison at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a detail that sets it apart from the warships the board usually shows. The prison occupied Seavey Island in the Piscataqua River, and during these years its administration tried to replace punishment with work, training, and self-government for the men it held. Labor like this was part of that routine, and the caption ties the scene to the U.S.S. Southerly, a vessel with its own connection to the station. The record is thin, so the exact work and the ship's role remain open questions.
