The record places the U.S.S. Dixie at a naval review in October 1912, a ceremony in which warships were lined up for inspection and public viewing. The title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which the record marks as unverified, so the ship's identity is worth checking against naval registers. The Washington, D.C.-based company was a prolific news photographer in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates document the period's growing public interest in the American navy. Look closely at the surface, too: the record notes streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating, which give the image a mottled, softened texture.
