Caught in the foreground by a ferry named *Long Island*, the cruiser *Olympia* steams through the Dewey Celebration naval parade in New York Harbor in 1899. *Olympia* was Commodore George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898, so the ship was the centerpiece of the welcome for the admiral after his victory. The parade drew large crowds to the waterfront, and the ferry's presence in the frame shows how the city's everyday harbor traffic shared the water with the warships. The photograph is a glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company.
