Grant's Tomb rises in the background, placing the battleship *Massachusetts* along the New York waterfront during the Dewey Naval Parade of 1899. The parade honored Admiral George Dewey, whose squadron had defeated the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in 1898, and it brought warships and large crowds to the Hudson River. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its views of American cities, landscapes and events, made this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative. Its setting and date make it a useful record of the navy's public role after the Spanish-American War.
