The battleship *Massachusetts* is shown out of the water in a dry dock, with her hull and keel exposed for inspection and repair. Commissioned in 1893, she was one of the early American battleships built of steel and armed with heavy guns, and she saw service in the Spanish-American War, including the 1898 fighting off Santiago de Cuba. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities, landscapes and industrial sites around the turn of the twentieth century, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative. Dry-docked views like this one show how much maintenance a large warship needed to stay in service.
