The U.S.S. Massachusetts sits out of the water in a dry dock here, her hull fully exposed for repair and cleaning. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, and the firm was known for large-format views of American places and industry. The negative is dated between 1896 and 1901, a period when the battleship was in active service and later took part in the Spanish-American War. Dry docks let crews reach the underwater hull, which could not be inspected or cleaned while the ship was afloat.
