Sailors gather around a 6-inch gun aboard the U.S.S. Massachusetts, one of the Navy's early steel battleships, whose secondary battery of these quick-firing guns lined its sides. The picture is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American places and ships in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Its date is given as between 1896 and 1901, a period when the Navy was modernizing its fleet and the Massachusetts was among the ships showing what American steel warships could do. Viewers can study the crew's uniforms and the gun's mounting to see how the ship was armed at the turn of the century.
