This view shows enlisted sailors at mealtime aboard the battleship U.S.S. Massachusetts, a vessel commissioned in 1896 that later served in the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial photography firm, made the glass negative, and its catalog from 1901 is the basis for dating it to the late 1890s or very early 1900s. Shipboard scenes like this were valued by the company and by the Navy as glimpses of daily routine in a crowded steel warship, where meals were eaten in shared mess spaces rather than private quarters.
