Few views of a battleship's working spaces survive from this period, and this one shows the steam hoisting gear aboard the U.S.S. Massachusetts, a Indiana-class battleship commissioned in 1896. Steam winches like these lifted boats, stores, and ammunition between decks, work that kept a capital ship operating. The ship later served with the Atlantic Fleet during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American railroads, cities, and industry, made the negative on glass plate, and the dating rests on its catalog of 1901.
