The ship's tailor shop aboard the battleship U.S.S. Massachusetts shows the everyday work that kept a crew of several hundred men in uniform at sea. The battleship was commissioned in 1893 and saw action in the Spanish-American War in 1898, and the Navy's ships carried their own tailors to make, mend, and alter clothing far from any shore supply. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American places and industries in the late 1890s and early 1900s, made this view on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative. Its interior setting offers a rare look at the cramped, working side of life below decks.
