Inside the turret of the battleship *Massachusetts*, a steel warship commissioned in 1896, this photograph captures the cramped working space around the ship's heavy guns. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide documentation of American places and people around 1900, made the glass negative sometime between 1896 and 1901. The Navy was then shifting toward large steel warships with heavy armament, and the *Massachusetts* later saw action in the Spanish-American War in 1898, including the blockade and bombardment off Santiago, Cuba.
