Crew members of the battleship *Massachusetts* gather for a meal in this 8 x 10 inch glass-plate negative, one of the large-format views the Detroit Publishing Company made of American life around 1900. Warship messes of that era were crowded spaces with long fixed tables and benches, so the picture offers a close look at everyday routine aboard a steel fleet vessel. The company's catalog from 1901 helps date the negative to the late 1890s or early 1900s, and its photochrom prints later made the firm's work widely known.
