Crew members of the battleship USS Massachusetts pose beside two of the ship's eight-inch guns, with the men's rank and the massive gun barrels setting the scale of the vessel. The Massachusetts was commissioned in 1893 and served in the Spanish-American War in 1898, when she took part in operations off Cuba. Stereo cards like this one were sold in pairs of nearly identical images, which when viewed through a stereoscope gave a sense of depth, so the sailors appear to stand almost within reach. The card's caption information is unverified, so the exact date and the men's identities remain uncertain.
