Here the camera looks into the after turret of the battleship U.S.S. Oregon, where the breech mechanisms of its 13-inch main guns fill the frame. Commissioned in 1896, Oregon carried four of these guns in two turrets, and its crew became famous in 1898 when the ship sailed from the Pacific coast around South America to join the fleet off Cuba during the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial photographer known for views of America's landscapes and new machines, made the negative in the years around the turn of the century. Its cramped steel interior and the men who worked it give a sense of the physical labor required to run a turret gun.
