Captain Albert S. Barker is pictured here with the officers of the battleship Oregon, a ship built at San Francisco's Union Iron Works and commissioned in 1896. The Oregon became famous in 1898, when she sailed from the Pacific coast around South America to join the U.S. fleet off Cuba during the Spanish-American War, a voyage that helped turn public attention toward the new American battleships. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its photographs of American places and people around 1900, made the image, and the two near-identical negatives suggest the same group was photographed more than once.
