The ship in this group portrait is the U.S.S. Miantonomoh, a turret vessel of the monitor type, and the photograph shows Captain Montgomery Sicard standing with his officers. Sicard, a career naval officer who died in 1900, commanded the ship during the years this photograph was likely taken. The Detroit Publishing Company made three close variant glass negatives of the scene, which is why the set is catalogued together. Such formal portraits of a ship's commander and staff were a common way for the Navy of the late 1800s to record a vessel's leadership.
