Miantonomoh was one of the large double-turret monitors the U.S. Navy kept in service after the Civil War, and this view shows her two armored turrets rising above a low hull built for coastal defense rather than open-ocean cruising. Her design traced back to John Ericsson's Civil War monitors, enlarged into a heavier ship that carried her guns in rotating towers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view around 1892, produced photographs of ships and American places for national sale, and three glass negatives of the ship survive, one inscribed with an 1892 copyright. The squat profile is worth noticing, since it shows how the turrets dominated the ship's appearance.
