The picture shows the U.S.S. Juniata, a steel-hulled cruiser of the U.S. Navy, which the record identifies as the subject rather than a generic warship. The glass negative is dated between 1890 and 1901, a period when the navy was replacing its wooden fleet with steel vessels and modernizing ahead of the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for color and black-and-white views of American places and industry, made the image, and its catalog dating helps place it in the decade before the war. Its 8 x 10 inch format gives the ship's hull and rigging a level of detail that smaller photographs often lose.
