Few pictures on this board show a steam yacht turned into a warship, and this one records the people who served aboard the U.S.S. *Free Lance* in 1898, the year the United States went to war with Spain. The Navy bought many privately owned steam yachts that spring and fitted them for patrol, dispatch, and coastal duty, since their speed and shallow draft suited work close to shore. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs and photochrom prints across the United States, made the two close glass-plate negatives of the officers and crew, and the portraits capture the mix of commissioned men and enlisted sailors that a vessel of this kind required.
