This portrait shows the captain and officers of the U.S.S. Newark, a steel cruiser of the late 1890s, rather than the ship itself. Posed group portraits like this one were a standard way for the Navy's officers to record their service and rank. The Newark belonged to the "New Navy" that replaced the aging wooden fleet after the 1880s, so its crew would have been among the first generation of officers trained on modern steel warships. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative, was known for its large-format views, and this copy reached the State Historical Society of Colorado by gift in 1949.
