Two glass negatives show Rear Admiral Francis Marvin Bunce posed with his staff inside the U.S.S. Newark, a protected cruiser built in the early 1890s as the new steel Navy took shape. The indoor setting, rather than the deck or a harbor view, puts the focus on the officers and the ship's interior rather than its exterior lines. Bunce died in 1901, and the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide travel and topographic views, listed these prints in its 1901 catalog, so they likely date from the late 1890s.
