A young boy named Vinson Walsh McLean is pictured with a birthday cake shaped like a battleship, which the record credits to Admiral George Dewey. The cake's warship form reflects the moment: Dewey's squadron, with the cruiser Olympia as flagship, destroyed the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay on May 1, 1898, and made him a national hero. The print was made in 1898 by the Washington photographer Clinedinst, when public enthusiasm for the navy ran high. The caption card's notes are old and unverified, so the Olympia and party details rest on that card alone.
