Olympia was Admiral George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898, so this view shows the cruiser that had carried him through that victory, here in New York during the Dewey Naval Parade of September 1899. The city staged the celebration to honor the admiral and the navy's success in the war with Spain. Made as glass dry plate negatives and catalogued by the Detroit Publishing Company, the pair of close variants preserves how the warship was presented to the public at the turn of the century.
