Captain George Dewey poses on the bridge of the U.S.S. Pensacola, a steel cruiser the Navy commissioned in 1890, in this large glass-plate portrait by the Detroit Publishing Company. Dewey later won national fame as commander of the Asiatic Squadron at Manila Bay in 1898. The date of the picture is an estimate based on the company's 1901 catalog, so it was most likely made in the decade before that battle, when Dewey was still building his naval career.
