Captain Charles E. Clark, commanding the battleship Oregon, appears in this 1898 view alongside a cadet named Leahy, placing the ship's chain of command in a single frame. Clark is best remembered for the Oregon's dash from San Francisco around Cape Horn to the Atlantic during the Spanish-American War. The passage took about two months and brought the battleship to the fleet off Cuba in time for the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of American places and industry, produced many photographs of naval officers and warships in this period.
