The title records the battleship *Oregon* firing on shore batteries at Santiago de Cuba, a moment from the Spanish-American War in 1898. Her crew had sailed from San Francisco around Cape Horn to join the Atlantic fleet, a voyage of roughly 14,000 miles that drew wide public attention and helped make the ship a symbol of American naval reach. The photograph is a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views of the period are valued for their detail. The Battle of Santiago, fought on July 3, 1898, ended with the destruction of the Spanish squadron trying to escape the harbor.
