The gallery's record places this view of the battleship Oregon at night, with its bridge and searchlights set against the dark hull. The ship was built at the Union Iron Works in San Francisco and commissioned in 1893, and it later became famous for its voyage from the Pacific to the Atlantic during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The glass-plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely around the turn of the twentieth century to document American landscapes, cities and new technology.
