The U.S.S. Oregon was one of the Navy's first modern battleships, a steel-hulled vessel commissioned in 1896 that built a national reputation during the Spanish-American War. In 1898 she made a dramatic voyage of roughly 14,000 miles from San Francisco around South America to join the fleet off Cuba, a trip that helped persuade Americans of the need for a larger navy and a canal across Central America. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American scenery and places in the years around 1900. Its maker is noted on the plate only as "Hart," and the date is an estimate based on the company's working period.
