Captain Charles Vernon Gridley, who commanded the cruiser U.S.S. Olympia, is the subject of this portrait, and the ship named in the title ties him to his vessel. Gridley led the Olympia at the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898, where Commodore George Dewey's squadron destroyed the Spanish fleet, and Dewey's order to "fire when ready, Gridley" became one of the war's best-known lines. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, and its catalog dates the plate to the years around 1900. Gridley died in 1898, so the portrait records him close to the height of his brief fame.
