The cruiser *Olympia*, built at the Union Iron Works in San Francisco and commissioned in 1895, was a steel protected cruiser of the U.S. Navy. The ship became famous as Commodore George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898, the opening action of the Spanish-American War. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers sold travel views of ships, towns and scenery to a national market around 1900. The picture dates to the late 1890s, when the new steel cruiser was among the Navy's most prominent vessels.
