The Olympia was a steel protected cruiser built at San Francisco's Union Iron Works and commissioned in 1895. As Commodore George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898, she led the American squadron that destroyed the Spanish Pacific fleet in a single day, making her a lasting symbol of the young navy's rise. This glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1895 and 1901, shows her in the years before that battle made her famous.
