The cruiser *Olympia* is best known as Commodore George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898, the opening engagement of the Spanish-American War. Built in San Francisco and commissioned in 1895, the steel-hulled ship was among the most modern vessels in the U.S. Navy when this picture was made around 1899. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer known for her documentary and portrait work, included the ship in her collection. Cyanotypes like this one used sunlight to produce a distinctive blue-and-white print, a process that was still common for record-keeping and artistic work at the turn of the century.
