Few ships of the period carry a stronger reputation than the U.S.S. Olympia, the steel cruiser that served as Commodore George Dewey's flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898. Its crew, shown here, were part of the force that destroyed the Spanish Pacific squadron in a single morning. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer known for her portraits and documentary work, made the image, so the record places it within a broader body of her photographs of American naval life. The board files the Olympia under battleships, though it was technically a protected cruiser, a distinction worth keeping in mind when reading its history.
