Captioned as the battleship Maine "as she appears today" in Havana Harbor on May 10, 1900, this stereograph shows the ship more than two years after it exploded and sank there in February 1898. The blast killed more than 250 American sailors. Its cause was never fully settled, but the disaster fed the public anger that helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War that same year. Issued as a stereo card by the Keystone View Company, the paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, giving home audiences a three-dimensional look at the wreck.
