The battleship *Maine* blew up and sank in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898, killing 260 American sailors and helping push the United States into the Spanish-American War. Salvage crews did not raise the hulk until 1911 and 1912, when they built a cofferdam around the wreck, pumped out the water, and floated it free. The hull was then towed out and sunk at sea. The caption card records no date, so the exact moment this photograph was taken is unconfirmed, but it documents the long and costly effort to clear the ship from the harbor.
