A rare view of the battleship's salvage in Havana harbor, this 1911 photograph shows work on the wreck of the U.S.S. Maine. The ship exploded and sank there on February 15, 1898, killing 260 American sailors and helping draw the United States into the Spanish-American War. More than a decade later, engineers were still working to lift the hulk from the harbor bottom, a project that drew wide attention. The wreck was eventually raised and later sunk at sea, and the salvage remains a notable episode in the ship's history.
