Captain Charles D. Sigsbee, who commanded the battleship *Maine*, and naval officer Montgomery Sicard appear among this lithograph's subjects, tying the print to the men at the center of the disaster in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. The explosion killed roughly 260 American sailors and inspired the rallying cry "Remember the Maine," which helped push the United States toward war with Spain that year. The Chicago firm Kurz & Allison produced many dramatic patriotic prints like this one for a public hungry for news about the conflict.
