Few things in Havana harbor drew more attention than the hulk of the battleship Maine, which sank there after an explosion on February 15, 1898, killing more than 250 crewmen. The explosion helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War, and the wreck stayed in the harbor for more than a decade. This June 1911 view records the salvage effort to lift the ship, a job that required pumping out water, bracing the hull, and bringing the wreck up in stages. The photograph shows the scale of the work and the rigging of the operation.
