Captain Charles D. Sigsbee is the subject here, and his role makes him a natural anchor for a picture on the battleship board: he commanded the USS Maine when she exploded and sank in Havana Harbor in February 1898. That disaster, which killed more than 250 American sailors, pushed the United States toward war with Spain later that spring. Sigsbee's portrait from the same year captures him at the center of those events. The record is thin on who made the print, so the image is best read as a document of the man and moment rather than of a particular ship.
