Three musicians of the ship's crew stand for this portrait: a Navy bugler, a Marine bugler, and a Marine drummer, all aboard the U.S.S. Maine. Bugle and drum calls on a warship set the rhythm of the day, signaling watches, meals, drills and ceremonies, so these men were part of the ship's daily routine. The Maine was commissioned in 1895 and sank in Havana harbor in February 1898, an explosion whose cause was long disputed and that helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War.
