Aboard the battleship Maine, a group of Marines works through a skirmish drill, spreading out and advancing in loose, staggered lines rather than the close ranks of older parade-ground formations. The ship had been commissioned in 1895, so this scene, dated around 1896, shows a relatively new vessel whose crew was still developing its training routines. Ships' Marines formed a small landing force that guarded the vessel and could fight ashore, and skirmish drill prepared them for open-ground combat. The glass negative is attributed to the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format plates recorded American places and daily life in the late 1890s and early 1900s.
