A fancy dress ball aboard the U.S.S. Maine in 1896 gives this interior view an unusual, lighthearted side of naval life, with crew and guests in costume filling the ship's quarters. The Maine had been commissioned only about a year earlier and was among the newer steel battleships in the United States Navy. Its later history adds weight to the scene: the ship exploded and sank in Havana harbor in February 1898, an event that helped bring on the Spanish-American War. The picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American places and people during this period.
