Sailors working signal flags are the focus of this view of the battleship *Maine*, photographed in the mid-1890s, when the ship was still new to the fleet. She was commissioned in 1895, and drills like this one kept crews practiced in the flag codes that passed orders between ships. The *Maine* became famous in February 1898, when she exploded and sank in Havana Harbor, an event that helped push the United States into war with Spain. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative, later became known for its broad record of American places and people.
